What’s the hardest job you’ve ever had? My answer to that would be parenting because I care so much about my performance. I want my evaluation to be positive. Of course there will always be opportunities for growth, because no one is perfect. No one understands that better than Angel Thompson. She is the creator of the Parent Job.
Angel is a mom who is inspiring the world through her blog Parent Job. Parenting is most definitely “The Job That Shapes the World”. She encourages us to be more intentional in our thinking while we perform on the job. Stop by her blog for inspiration, creativity and meaningful discussion about raising children. I was recently featured on her blog. Check it out below.
Meet Monique Johnson
What do you like most about being a parent?
You reap what you sow as parents, and I’m seeing the fruits of our efforts in their personalities, academic achievement and athletic ability. Each stage of development has brought new and different challenges but that’s all a part of being a parent. There are many teachable moments and I use them often to further develop their character. I am proud to be their mom.
Who or what has had the greatest impact on you as a parent? How?
My parents had the greatest impact on me as a parent. They demonstrated and instilled a number of values in me including family love, education, support, commitment, determination and responsibility. I also had the opportunity to be a full time at home mom for eight years. The time was well spent and I believe it made a difference. We have moved several times and it provided the stability needed. I wouldn’t trade that time with my kids.
What’s the best parenting advice you’ve ever received? (Or, what’s one bit of parenting advice you have for us?)
There is no instruction manual for perfect parenting. We just need to do our very best and make choices in the best interest of our children. Lead by example because our children are watching.
How do/did you overcome parenting challenges?
My husband and I have different styles but we try to be on one accord when it comes to parenting challenges. We consult with one another to share perspectives. It’s a good balance. I also pray for guidance.
At Parent Job, the motto is “The Parent Job Shapes the World.” How are you shaping the world through your children? (What values are you instilling (or have instilled) in them?)
I encourage my children to be critical thinkers and problem solvers. Effective communication is important. I challenge them to be leaders not followers, although following is fine in the right context. I am instilling commitment and responsibility in them. Lastly, I am exposing them to the world through travel. It is important to know that we live in a multicultural society and there is a big world out there to be explored.
