United We Serve is President Obama’s nationwide service initiative that calls people like you and me to come together to impact change in our communities. National Volunteer Week is April 6-12.
During National Volunteer Week last year, I had the pleasure of serving alongside a group of people at a local assisted living facility for senior citizens. The residents welcomed us into their cottages to clean their windows. While it may sound like manual labor, it was more of a labor of love. We talked with the residents, and engaged with them while working. They enjoyed our company and we enjoyed theirs. The intrinsic feeling that you get when you step outside of yourself and your own life to help someone else is phenomenal. It’s a fulfilling experience. It was a great day.
I don’t have a project lined up yet for next week but I place volunteers in our local elementary schools for our reading program on a weekly basis. Volunteers read one on one with kindergarten students in five elementary schools four days a week. It’s such a meaningful experience for all parties involved. The support of the community has been exceptional. It’s priceless.
